Build from language to print
Read aloud, talk about words and sounds, and help your child notice that print represents spoken language. Formal instruction works best when it connects with meaningful language.
Teach a manageable sequence
Introduce letter-sound relationships clearly, practice blending them into simple words, and give the child chances to read text that matches what has been taught.
Keep sessions short and useful
A predictable ten or fifteen minutes can be more sustainable than occasional long sessions. Stop before frustration becomes the main experience.
Watch the child, not the calendar
Children develop at different rates. Use age as context, not a promise that every child should reach the same reading milestone at the same moment.
